Series of five watercolour and pencil works on paper
Emergency Gynaecology Consultation Room, Royal London Hospital

Artist Giles Round was commissioned to make a series of works for the Emergency Gynaecology Consultation Room at the Royal London Hospital. This room is used as a space to deliver difficult news, such as the loss of a pregnancy. It also functions as a counselling room for patients and their families across multiple departments. Vital Arts were commissioned to transform this room with new artwork and interior furnishings, from a stark, windowless room into a comfortable and welcoming space, to support the wellbeing of those using the service.

These works were created during the lockdowns of the Covid-19 pandemic. With exhibitions and projects postponed, Round turned to the studios of other artists for inspiration and escapism. For the works in the consultation room, the artist drew on documentary photos of the interior workspaces of Ellsworth Kelly and Agnes Martin. Using delicate watercolour paint, Round has gently flattened the perspective and abstracted the image to just the essential outlines. With a hint of a vase, a mirror, or potted plant, we hope that the subtle references to domestic spaces and interiors will provide comfort and familiarity to patients experiencing a particularly difficult time.
