Anka Dabrowska

Royal London, 2011

Cardboard, wood, found wallpaper, found objects, spray paint, glue
This was a temporary installation, commissioned for the first phase of the new Royal London Hospital building. It is no longer on display.

This commission, by 2012 Artist in Residence Anka Dabrowska, is based on the shapes and architecture of The Old Royal London Hospital. Tiny jewel-like constructions are made from scraps of packaging, photos and found material. The drawings, which form part of her installation, refer to images found in and around the local area and reflect the vibrancy of the street life of Whitechapel. These drawings are intentionally sparse and restrained, whilst the sculptures are dense and richly layered, demonstrating the artist’s facility for improvised creativity. By bringing in traces of the old hospital, the artwork celebrates the Royal London Hospital’s transition into its new building.

Anka Dabrowska was born in 1979 in Warsaw, Poland. She gained a BA and then an MA in Fine Arts from University of Northumbria in 2003. Since graduating she has exhibited widely both in the UK and internationally. Dabrowska exhibited with Vital Arts in ‘Material Worlds’ in 2008, at St Bartholomew’s Hospital and Royal London Hospital.
