Radiotherapy, St Bartholomew’s Hospital

Artworks by Darren Almond, Susan Derges, Simon Patterson and Sophy Rickett have been been commissioned for the Radiotherapy Department. Once inside the lead-lined, bunker-like rooms, patients can feel anxious in the darkened spaces. Patients are required to lie very still whilst receiving radiotherapy treatment, so these back-lit artworks overhead provide a point of focus. Images of reconfigured celestial constellations, magical tree canopies and moonlit flowers are installed as light-boxes into the ceilings of each treatment area, giving patients the opportunity to feel transported away from the everyday.
