Barts Hospital Mortuary, East Wing
A two part commission located at two sites: Whipps Cross Hospital Bereavement Suite and the Barts Mortuary.
Julia Vogl worked closely with the Trust’s Bereavement Coordinator and multi-faith Chaplaincy Team in her commission for the Bereavement Suite at Barts Hospital. Vogl transformed the area where grieving families gather, into a sanctuary of peace and reflection. Drawing on Islamic tile patterns, historic designs by William Morris (whose family home is located in Walthamstow, near to Whipps Cross Hospital), as well as trees found on the hospital site itself, her installation includes prints and an illuminated sculpture.
Known for her socially-engaged public projects, Vogl is inspired by political events, social behaviour, and the community, and she aims to create works that reveal underlying cultural values. The British/American artist graduated from the Slade School of Art and has recently completed large scale projects in Hong Kong, Washington, DC, Newcastle as well as several in London.
