Freya Stockford

Familiar Still, 2023

Digital Prints, Acrylic and Gesso on Canvas, Vinyl on, and embedded in, Whiterock Cladding
Clinical Assessment Units, 5th and 7th Floor, St Bartholomew’s Hospital

Freya Stockford has created an installation that runs through two floors of the new Clinical Assessment Units (CAU) at Barts. The unit serves oncology  patients who make multiple visits, so Vital Arts sought to create an environment that was reminiscent of home, with images of house plants, book shelves, cut flowers, vases, water jugs, fruit, coffee mugs,  and other items.

Through a series of paintings, prints and designs on, and embedded into, the whiterock wall cladding, Stockford has captured fleeting but familiar and gentle scenes, encouraging quiet moments of reflection.

Interested in domestic settings and commonplace objects, and how they come together to create a memory, Stockford sees her paintings as an untold story, with events leading up to the still life, the moment of the still life and the world straight after it. Specific repeated themes add an element of consistency throughout varying spaces across CAU on 5th and 7th Floors.

Freya Stockford is a painter from Huddersfield and now based in Leeds. After graduating from Central St Martins, she continued to train in Painting and Printmaking at Glasgow School of Art. After losing her work in the fire at the GSA in 2014, she has continued her practice from her studio at Assembly House, Leeds. Stockford has exhibited internationally, including Miami, Singapore, New York and Austin, Texas.
