Government Art Collection: Ways of Seeing

In 2019 Vital Arts collaborated with Waltham Forest, the first London Borough of Culture, to bring artworks to the staff and patients at Whipps Cross Hospital.

Ways of Seeing was an exciting partnership with the Government Art Collection and supported by additional funding from the Art Fund, to place 68 artworks in Chingford, Leyton, Leytonstone and Walthamstow, over four months. Setting out to offer ‘art on every corner’, the idea was to show artworks in public, and largely non-museum, democratic spaces where people could get close to works that ordinarily hung on government and embassy walls.

Vital Arts was pleased to place Maria Farrar’s Cat (2016) in the Ultrasound Waiting Room at Whipps Cross Hospital. The painting invites the viewer to share a quiet moment with Cat whilst waiting. The painting is on display from 24 April – 31 August 2019.

Maria Farrar was born in the Philippines, grew up in Japan, and now lives and works in London. She gained a BFA in Fine Art from the Ruskin School of Art, Oxford, and an MFA in Painting from the Slade School of Fine Art, London.
