The Islanders

Sam Ayre

As an extension of the Vital Arts collaboration with Art Night London 2017, Sam Ayre has been running a series of creative workshops with students at the Royal London Children’s Hospital. This project is based on the work of Charles Avery, and uses his ‘The Islanders’ as a springboard for ideas. Students explored imagined animals, ecologies, roles, their future selves, and philosophical inquiry to create new works of art.

Outcomes and evaluation

Two sessions were delivered in December 2017 and were attended by 17 children ranging from 4 - 13-years-old. The feedback from the sessions has been very positive: both artist-educator and teachers noted that the kids were enthusiastic about Charles Avery’s art book and actively participated in all activities.

"The environment on the workshop was positive and buzzing and that really helped to engage students in the tasks. Students who earlier in the week were quiet and unengaged were actively taking part and engaged in all task. This was great to see"
