Gynaecology Outpatients Department and Emergency Gynaecology Department, Newham Hospital

Michelle Wolodarsky’s commission for Newham Hospital Gynaecology Department was based on the theme of luminous liminality, which describes being between two places, or two stages, at once, guided by light and warmth. It can be viewed as being on the verge of transitioning into something new - which is often the experience of patients receiving treatment.

Wolodarsky portrays this idea using light and warm shadows, moving through modernist, surreal domestic interiors, based on the centuries-old tradition of trompe l’oeil. ‘From Morning to Midnight’ maps the movement and rhythms of light throughout the day.

Artworks greet patients as they enter each area, offering a calm, empty scene onto which they can project themselves. Wolodarsky created the artworks to respond to the colour schemes in waiting areas and counselling rooms, adding to the sense of harmony and symmetry.

I make images, whether with paint, pastel, film or the written word, which deal with absence and the projection of desire. In my work, I attempt to bridge the gap between the reality and pure fiction.
