This unique print was produced as part of his public art commission for Vital Arts in 2009 – ‘The Department of Ornithology’, now on display at Whipps Cross Hospital.

Devised as a joyful word search puzzle for visitors to disentangle, his commission of over forty painted signs featuring the jumbled names of birds is a playful work that is inspired by the artists’ love of the country and nature. This print provides the key to his bird spotting conundrum.

Bob has undertaken another commission for us for the new Royal London Children’s Hospital ‘The National Animals of the East End’.

Bob and Roberta Smith has worked in a variety of media including painting, performance, sculpture, film and installation. He is known for employing DIY methods – including painting on pieces of scrap wood – and a number of influences from punk to folk in order to personalise political sloganeering. Using humour as a tactic, his work often challenges respected authorities.

Bob and Roberta Smith (born UK, 1963) lives and works in London. He completed a BA at the University of Reading followed by an MA at Goldsmiths. He has been included in many major exhibitions, including Intelligence: New British Art in 2000 at the Tate, as well as ALTERMODERN, curated by Nicolas Bourriaud also at the Tate Britain where he designed the Christmas Tree in 2008. He has also exhibited at the Whitechapel; Serpentine; ICA, London; Hayward Gallery; Camden Arts Centre; South London Gallery; Royal College of Art; Arnolfini Gallery, Bristol; Transmission Gallery; Staatliche Kunsthalle; Baden Baden; Germany; Grazer Kunstverein, Graz, Tramway Glasgow; Museum of Modern Art, Oslo; Courtauld Institute; Tate Liverpool; The Baltic among many others. He was awarded the Prix de Rome through the BritishAcademy and a Harkness Fellowship with CooperUnionSchool in New York. His work is held in collections at the Tate, Arts Council, British Council, Southampton City Museum and Art Gallery and the Goss Michael Foundation.
