Matthew Burrows
The works donated by Matthew Burrows for the project #100NHSRooms are from the ‘In and Through’ series. Burrows explains the works are:
“All are made with coloured and black ink on paper. They are response to the wild spaces in which I dwell. A visual equivalent to moving in and through these spaces and an attempt to find a shared wilderness and a kind of realism. This should not be confused with illusion, but a response to the way the world ‘is’. It is as much to do with my heart beat and nerves as it is the universe beyond.
I have always believed that a central role is to facilitate transformation mentally, physically and spiritually. I am delighted that my work is included in NHS Rooms an environment of care committed to the healthy transformation of all.”

Matthew Burrows is an East Sussex based abstract painter. His artistic practice is reflective, thoughtful and slow to reveal complex structural spaces filled with marks, shapes and pigment. He is the founder of the Artist Support Pledge, when the Covid-19 pandemic started to affect the UK in the first half of March, Burrows had the idea to start posting works for sale for £200. When he had sold £1k worth of artwork he pledged to buy some art work himself for £200, and encouraged other artists to do the same. 95,000 posts later the #artistsupportpledge is playing a vital role in keeping the visual arts industry alive, as well as helping to build a community and promote generosity.
